Životopis

Jadranka Skorin-Kapov  redovita je profesorica i pročelnica Odjela za menadžment (Head of Management) na fakultetu College of Business pri njujorškom državnom sveučilištu Stony Brook (Stony Brook University).

Profesorica Skorin-Kapov rođena je 30. studenog 1955. godine u Puli. Godine 1977. godine diplomirala je primjenjenu matematiku na Prirodoslovno-matematičkom fakultetu (PMF) u Zagrebu. Po završetku studija zaposlila se u Sveučilišnom računskom centru (SRCU). Uz rad u SRCU, godine 1983. magistrirala je na matematičkom odjelu PMF-a sa temom iz kvadratnog cjelobrojnog programiranja. Iste godine dobila je stipendiju za doktorski studij na kanadskom sveučilištu University of British Columbia, te je 1984. godine započela doktorski studij iz operacijskih istraživanja na Faculty of Commerce and Business Administration. Doktorirala je 1987. godine sa temom iz kvadratnog programiranja i razvoja polinomijalnih algoritama pod nazivom “Quadratic Programming: Quantitative Analysis and Polynomial Running Time Algorithms”, te je primljena kao gostujući profesor na istom fakultetu.

Godine 1988. Jadranka Skorin-Kapov prihvatila je poziciju docenta na državnom njujorškom sveučilištu Stony Brook University. Tamo je ranim izborim 1993. godine postala izvanredni profesor sa trajnom pozicijom (tenure), a 1998. godine postala je redoviti profesor.

Uz puno radno vrijeme redovitog profesora, Skorin-Kapov 2000. godine na Sveučilištu Stony Brook upisuje doktorski studij na Department of Philosophy. Na filozofiji je 2002. godine magistrirala sa temom iz analitičke filozofije, a 2007. godine doktorirala je sa temom iz fenomenologije iznenađenja i estetskog doživljaja pod nazivom “Beyond Anticipation: Exceeding of Expectation and Aesthetics”.

Nakon doktorata iz filozofije, kao “vječan” student po vlastitom izboru, Skorin-Kapov 2010. godine upisuje treći doktorat i to na Department of Art. Tamo je magistrirala 2012. godine sa temom o djelu slikara Pieta Mondriana, a 2014. godine doktorirala s temom iz filmske umjetnosti, pod nazivom “On Darren Aronofsky’s Filmography from 1998 to 2014: Obsessions, Addictions, and the Pursuit of Perfection”.

Na svom matičnom fakultetu College of Business at Stony Brook University profesorica Skorin-Kapov je godine 2015. izabrana za pročelnicu Odjela za menadžment (Head of Management). Zbog znanstvenog rada u primjenjenoj matematici, Skorin-Kapov je 2015. godine izabrana za pridruženog profesora na Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics, College of Engineering and Applied Science, a zbog znanstvenog rada u humanistici 2015. godine izabrana je za pridruženog profesora na Department of Philosophy, College of Arts and Sciences, te je time postala jedini profesor na sveučilištu Stony Brook sa pozicijama na sva tri dijela sveučilišta, što je rezultat njezinog renesansnog pristupa znanosti. Da bi doprinijela edukaciji svojih studenata, profesorica Skorin-Kapov je godine 2015. na sveučilištu Stony Brook osnovala i od tada vodi Center za integraciju poslovne edukacije i humanistike (Center for Integration of Business Education & Humanities -CIBEH). Obrazloženje za uključivanje humanističkih pitanja u poslovni kurikulum je potreba da se proširi edukacija uz naglasak na osobnu i društvenu odgovornost koja je nedvojbeno potrebna u današnjem složenom svijetu.

Za svoj znanstveni rad Jadranka Skorin-Kapov je 2016. godine dobila prestižnu nagradu SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Scholarship and Creative Activities. Državno njujorško sveučiliste The State University of New York (SUNY) je najveći i najopsežniji sustav višeg obrazovanja u SAD-u sa 64 centara u svom sastavu. Godinu dana kasnije, 2017. godine, Skorin-Kapov je dobila još jednu prestižnu nagradu, The Ideas Worth Teaching Award od strane američkog Aspen Instituta, te je magazin Quarz at Work proglasio njezin kolegij Business Ethics: Critical Thinking through Film među 20 najboljih poslovnih kolegija na svijetu. Znanstveni rad profesorice Skorin-Kapov u domeni humanističkih znanosti je doživio izuzetnu reputaciju pozivom za sudjelovanje kao ekspert-sugovornik u popularnoj američkoj televizijskoj seriji od strane National Geographic, StarTalk sa poznatim astrofizičarom Neil deGrasse Tysonom.

Sa tri doktorata u tri različite struke i sa međunarodno priznatim radovima u sve tri struke, Jadranka Skorin-Kapov ima renesansan pristup znanosti što je neobično za današnje vrijeme pretežno uskih specijalizacija.

U području analitike i operacijskih istraživanja znanstveni rad profesorice Skorin-Kapov uključuje rješavanje optimizacijskih problema uvjetovnih društvenim i poslovnim okolnostima. Njezin rad obuhvaća probleme optimizacije u razvoju tehnologije, inženjerstvu, dizajnu prometnih mreža, strojarstvu i proizvodnim procesima. Njezin je rad financiran kroz projekte od strane prestižne američke zaklade za znanost The National Science Foundation (NSF) koja podupire temeljna istraživanja u znanosti i inženjerstvu. Skorin-Kapov je višestruka dobitnica projekata financiranih od strane NSF Directorate for Engineering, dodijeljenih joj za razvoj heurističkih metoda optimizacije. Uz to, Skorin-Kapov je dobila Fulbrightovu stipendiju, te je višestruka dobitnica znanstvenih stipendija sa raznih sveučilista (University of British Columbia, Canada; Stony Brook University, USA; Catholic University of Valparaiso, Chile).

Razvoj tehnologije se često opisuje kao “mač sa dvije oštrice”, sa izuzetno pozitivnim, ali moguće i negativnim posljedicama za čovjeka. Razvoj algoritama u kojima se nastoji modelirati računalne procese prema procesima u ljudskom mozgu, navodi na potrebu suradnje sa humanističkim istraživačima, kroz područja estetike i etike. To je Jadranku Skorin-Kapov ponukalo da proširi svoj znanstveni horizont, ali na efikasan i stručno rigorozan način.

U društvenim znanostima, Jadranka Skorin-Kapov analizira estetsko doživljavanje te profesionalnu i poslovnu etiku izuzetno značajnu obzirom na razvoj tehnologije i utjecaj novih tehnoloških ostvarenja na pojedinca i na društvo u cjelini.  Njezina knjiga The Aesthetics of Desire and Surprise: Phenomenology and Speculation obrađuje središnje teme u suvremenoj kontinentalnoj filozofiji: strast/želju, očekivanja, višak (excess), rupturu/prekid/pauzu, transcendenciju, imanenciju i iznenađenje. Njezina knjiga The Intertwining of Aesthetics and Ethics: Exceeding of Expectations, Ecstasy, Sublimity razrađuje isprepletenost estetike i etike. U knjizi pod naslovom Darren Aronofsky’s Films and the Fragility of Hope Skorin-Kapov svoja saznanja u filozofiji i matematici koristi za analizu raznolike filmografije Darrena Arnofskog, opisanog kao filozofskog redatelja obzirom na teme života i smrti, ovisnosti i opsesije, žrtvovanja i krhkosti nade.

Istraživanja Jadranke Skorin-Kapova posvećena integraciji tehnologije, filozofije i umjetnosti rezultirala su njezinim nagrađenim kolegijem i objavljenom knjigom “Professional and Business Ethics trough Film: The Allure of Cinematic Presentation and Critical Thinking”. U toj knjizi Skorin-Kapov kombinira razvoj tehnologije i poslovne teme sa etikom i umjetničkim izražavanjem, otvarajući horizonte kreativnog razmišljanja.

Neovisno o znanstvenom radu, Jadranka Skorin-Kapov piše i poeziju pa je godine 1995. pod djevojačkim prezimenom Boljunčić objavila knjigu poezije na čakavskom dijalektu pod naslovm “Vajk z manon” (“Uvijek sa mnom”).

Jadranka Skorin-Kapov članica je Hrvatskog Društva za Operacijska Istraživanja (HDOI) od osnutka 1992. godine. Također, članica je profesionalnog instituta Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS) od njegovog osnutka 1995. Kroz znanstveni rad iz operacijskih istraživanja Jadranka Skorin-Kapov je surađivala na organizaciji mnogobrojnih konferencija u Hrvatskoj, te je održala brojna predavanja na hrvatskim konferencijama. Vezano uz hrvatske časopise, od 1997-2004 Skorin-Kapov je bila članica uredničkog odbora časopisa Journal of Computing and Information Technology (CIT), a od 1997 do danas je član uređivačkog odbora časopisa Mathematical Communications.

U domeni društvenih znanosti Jadranka Skorin-Kapov proučava odnos profesionalne etike i zakonodavstva u djelovanju odgovornih profesionalaca u strukama poput arhitekture, geodezije, prava. Uz to, Skorin-Kapov proučava etiku i pitanja nadležnosti u djelovanju jedinica lokalne samouprave i relevantnih državnih tijela.

Interdisciplinarni pristup znanosti profesorice Skorin-Kapov kroz koji ona kombinira analitiku u modeliranju problema, te sagledava estetsko proživljavanje pojedinca i propitkuje etičke posljedice i na pojedinca i na društvo, izuzetno je značajan za suočavanje sa izazovima i promjenama i u društvu i kod pojedinca.

Jadranka Skorin-Kapov za dopisnu članicu HAZU izabrana je 2020.
