Željko Tomičić, F.C.A. was appointed head of the Department of Archaeology for a term of four years starting on January 29, 2021.

The Department of Archaeology was founded in 1949 by extracting it from formerly JAZU Historical Institute, where it had previously acted as an Archaeological Section. It develops systematic interdisciplinary archaeological and historical research of the ancient period in Croatia based on written historical sources and archaeological material, with an emphasis on the territory of northern Croatia, i.e., the Croatian part of the Roman province of Pannonia. Archaeological excavations of several sites in northern Croatia are predominantly aimed at exploring ancient urbanism, including necropolises.

The department has a reference library used by experts from other institutions, and fosters library exchange with domestic and foreign publications based on Archaeological Papers and Discussions, the Journal of the Department of Social Sciences and the Department of Archeology.
