Scientific Councils HAZU

The task of the Academy Councils is to encourage, organize, coordinate and assist scientific and professional research in their scientific and artistic fields. For this purpose, the councils bring together scientific and professional institutions and prominent scientists and experts in the field of their activities.

The Scientific Council for Maritime Affairs continues the work of the previous body of a similar name, established on 22nd June 1982. Vladislav Brajković, Fellow of the Croatian Academy, a well-known expert in maritime law and admiral of the Honorary Navy of Boka Kotorska, was elected its first chair. In 1994, Zlatko Winkler, Fellow of the Croatian Academy, took over the presidential duty, while Prof. DSc Pavao Komadina succeeded him in 1996. Since 2004, Ivo Senjanović, Fellow of the Croatian Academy, has been performing the duty of the Council chair. The Scientific Council for Maritime Affairs acts in the Academy spirit as the society’s conscience as concerns essential matters regarding the development and existence of Croatian maritime affairs and shipbuilding. The main Council activities comprise organizing round tables on the topics of current maritime issues in Croatia and worldwide, and inviting guest lecturers among eminent scientists and experts in science and technology development to speak on the topics of maritime affairs and shipbuilding. The Council’s annual meetings are, in addition to current pressing issues, oriented to topic-related lectures. The most of the lectures are published in the Bulletin of the Academy Department of Technical Sciences, as well as in the journal entitled “Brodogradnja”.

At the regular annual session of the Council Assembly held on 28 March 2014, Ivo Senjanović, Fellow of the Croatian Academy, was re-elected chair of the Scientific Council for Maritime Affairs. At the annual session of the Council Assembly held on 20 April 2016, a ne w section was formed: the Section for Croatian Maritime Heritage.
