The project “Provenance Research on Artwork in Zagreb Collections” deals with tracking the destinies of artworks and/or art collections in Zagreb which were affected by changes in geopolitical circumstances in different stages of Croatian history, especially before, during and after WWII.

Investigating the provenance of artworks before and after their post-war musealization is a challenging, but necessary element of a comprehensive research of national cultural heritage. Therefore, assessing of the role of different regimes, institutions and individuals in the management of artistic heritage will contribute to a better understanding of how cultural heritage influences the processes of societal development marked by (un)resolved historical conflicts.

Artworks identified and/or contextualized from the point of view of their provenance will also be researched by use of traditionaI methods of art history, thus ensuring a comprehensive approach to the topic.

The transparency of research, firmly grounded in the archival sources and material traces of ownership on the artwork, will ensure the transfer of experience and methodology not only to art historians, but to other professionals as well. This will have a significant impact on establishing responsible and reliable research practices of this understudied and still ‘sensitive’ topic in Croatian institutions concerned with cultural heritage.
The project is implemented at the Strossmayer Gallery of Old Masters of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts, and is financed by the Croatian Science Foundation (Hrvatska zaklada za znanost).

In addition, the project will benefit from various forms of collaboration which have been arranged with the Ministry of Culture and Media of the Republic of Croatia, the Museum Documentation Center and the Museum of Contemporary Art.
