Peter Wriggers was born on February 3, 1951 in Hamburg and is head of the Institute of Mechanics of the Continuum of Leibniz University (Leibniz Universität) in Hanover. Since 2015, he has been vice-chancellor for science at the same university. From 1990 to 1998 he was a professor at the Technical University (Technische Universität) in Darmstadt. As a visiting professor, he has repeatedly resided at the University of the State of California, in Berkeley, USA, as well as at several other renowned world universities. Its scientific activity is in the field of numerical mechanics. His most important contributions are: the development of finite elements for nonlinear analysis of structures, solving contact problems, multiscale numerical methods for modeling materials, modeling biological tissues. He has hosted more than 47 PhDs. He is the author of 13 books and more than 239 articles in renowned international journals. He is the editor-in-chief of three scientific journals. His papers have been cited more than 5,000 times, and the h-index is 39. He is an honorary doctor of three universities: The University of Technology (Technologia Poznańska) in Poznan, Poland, ENS in Cachan, France, and the Technical University of Darmstadt.

Prof. Wriggers established a fruitful collaboration with scientists from Croatian universities. He had joint projects with a group of researchers at the Department of Construction of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture of the University of Split and at the Department of Mechanics and Strength of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture, University of Zagreb. Several younger Croatian colleagues trained at prof. Wriggers Institute and under his mentorship a doctoral dissertation was made. Joint research has resulted in joint publications in journals and proceedings. Prof. Wriggers and his associates have visited the University of Zagreb on several occasions. The collaboration resulted in the scientific book Multiscale Modeling of Heterogeneous Structures, Springer, 2018, which is the proceedings of the papers from the scientific conference of the same name held in Dubrovnik in 2016, and the editors are J. Sorić, P. Wriggers and O. Allix. Prof. Wriggers, at the suggestion of the Department of Technical Sciences, was a guest of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts in March 2017 and on this occasion he gave a scientific lecture  Computational Mechanics in Science and Engineering-Quo Vadis. At the international congresses of the Croatian Society for Mechanics in 2009 and 2015, he gave plenary lectures.

He was elected as a corresponding member of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts in 2018.
