Curriculum Vitae

Rainer Altherr, a German geologist and petrologist, was born on August 6, 1947 in Freiburg. He studied mathematics, physics, mineralogy and petrology, received doctorates from the universities of Freiburg and Breinschweig, and completed a postdoctoral study of experimental petrology at the University of Chicago. He was a full professor of petrology and geochemistry and director of the Mineralogical Institute of Karl-Ruprecht University in Heidelberg.He is the holder of numerous research awards.
He has participated in a number of major research projects DFG and DAAD (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, Deutsche Akademische Austauschdienst), and international programs, among them research programs of igneous, metamorphic and ophiolithic complexes of the Dinarides and other parts of the geological area of the Balkan Peninsula, Greece, the Aegean Space and other parts of the Mediterranean area.
He is a member of the most respected scientific societies of Germany and the world, holder of numerous highest functions, the main publisher of the most respected European journal European Journal of Mineralogy. He is the author of more than 150 scientific papers printed in journals of the highest world standard.
He had many years of cooperation and contacts with scientists from Croatia and is responsible for the development of petrology in Croatia. He also gave lectures at the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts. He is a member of the editorial board of the journal Geologica Croatica from Zagreb. Since 2004 he is a correspondent member of the CASA.
