Curriculum Vitae

Nikola Benčić (Nikolaus Bencsics), a Burgenland Croatian writer, linguist, was born in Nagynarda in Hungary on October 12, 1938. He attended the Croatian teaching school in Budapest and finished his 4th grade with graduation in 1957 in Grän, Austria. He studied Slavic and history in Vienna, where he received his Doctorate (1963) with the theme about Mato Meršić Miloradić. Professor at the Music-Pedagogical Real Gymnasium and Pedagogical Academy in Eisenstadt from 1984 to 2007 and proofreader at the Institute of Slavic Studies at the University of Vienna.

He is the founder of the Scientific Institute of The Burgenland Croats. Published poems in prose. He is an accomplished researcher of the literary, linguistic, and cultural history of the Burgenland Croats (Gradišćanskohrvatsko narodno kazališće, 1998; Književnost gradišćanskih Hrvata od XVI. stoljeća do 1921., 1998; Književnost gradišćanskih Hrvata od 1921. do danas, 2000).
He is an associate on dictionaries and manuals: Nimško-gradišćanskohrvatsko-hrvatski rječnik (1982), Gradišćanskohrvatsko-hrvatsko-nimški rječnik (1991), Gramatika gradišćanskohrvatskoga jezika (2003).

Since 1998 he is a correspondent member of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts.
