Curriculum Vitae

Zdravko Mlinar, a Slovenian sociologist, was born on January 30, 1933, in Žiri, Slovenia. He graduated in 1958 from the Faculty of Law, University of Ljubljana. He received his Doctorate in 1967, and since 1974 he has been a full professor of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Ljubljana, and today he is a professor emeritus of the same university and works as an active researcher and head of the Center for Spatial Sociology.

He is the first head of the Society of Sociologists of Slovenia (1965-1969), and since 1980 his honorary member. He is the president of the publishing council of the journal “Teorija in praksa” (Ljubljana) and a member of the publishing boards of eight international journals in the field of sociology. He was elected as an outstanding member of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts in 1981 and a full member in 1987. He was secretary of the SASA Department of Historical and Social Sciences from 1996 to 1999.

Zdravko Mlinar, F.C.A., has a rich scientific opus. For the book “Humanizacija mesta”, he received the Boris Kidrič Award of Harmony in 1985, for the book “Protuslovja družbenega razvoja” in 1987, the Vladimir Bakarić Award for the best book in the field of social sciences in Yugoslavia, and for the book “Idividuacija in globalizacija v prostoru” in 1995, the Award of the Republic of Slovenia for “top achievements in the field of sociology”.

His connection with Croatia and his cooperation with Croatian scientists are particularly notable. For over ten years he was a member of the Study Group “Čovjek i sistem” in Zagreb, where once a month scientists from the field of social sciences from all over the former Yugoslavia met and worked on joint projects. He participated as a lecturer in postgraduate studies “Organizational Democracy” and “Economy and Democracy” at the Interuniversity Center in Dubrovnik. Zdravko Mlinar is a scientist of international reputation, who has continuously and fully engaged in Croatian scientific endeavours.

He was elected as a corresponding member of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts in 2004.
