Curriculum Vitae

Mladen Bestvina, a professor of mathematics at the University of Utah (University of Utah, Salt Lake City, Utah, USA), is a world-renowned Croatian and American mathematician. He was born in Osijek in 1959, where he graduated from elementary and secondary school. Already as a high school student, he distinguished himself with outstanding results in domestic and international mathematical competitions (two silver and one bronze medal at the Mathematical Olympiad). Immediately after graduating in 1982 from the University of Zagreb, he went to the University of the State of Tennessee (University of Tennessee) in Knoxville, USA, where he received his Doctorate as early as 1984. For the next nine years, he spent as a researcher, assistant professor  or associate professor at the leading mathematical institutions in the world: in the Department of Mathematical Sciences Research Institute at the University of California in Berkeley, at the High Institute of Exact Sciences (Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques) in Paris, at the University of California in Los Angeles and at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton.

Since 1993, he has been a Professor, and since 2008 a Distinguished Professor at the University of Utah.

Bestvina is the editor (Associate Editor) of Annals of Mathematics, which has been considered the leading mathematical journal in the world for years. In addition, he is a member of the editoral board of ten important journals including Transactions of the American Mathematical SocietyMemoirs of the American Mathematical SocietyJournal of Topology and AnalysisGeometric and Functional Analysis i GroupsGeometry and Dynamics. .

He published a large number of papers and gave many lectures. A special recognition was shown to him when he gave a lecture at the World Mathematical Congress in Beijing in 2002 on the group of external automorphisms of the free group of rank n. In his scientific work he made important contributions to geometric topology (universal continuums, multiplicity, hyperbolic structures at 2- and 3- multiplicity) and geometric group theory. In this discipline today he is one of the leading specialists in the world.

Through his cooperation with mathematicians in Croatia, he significantly contributes to the progress of mathematics in our environment.

Since 2012, he has been a correspondent member of the Hazu.
