Curriculum Vitae

Ivan Marković, Croatian philologist and linguist, was born in Zagreb on 5 July 1974. He finished primary and secondary school in the same city, as well as the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, FHSS (1997), University of Zagreb, where he graduated in Croatian language and literature. The FHSS awarded him a master’s degree (for his master’s thesis Pridjev kao način izricanja kategorije neodređenosti / određenosti u hrvatskome jeziku, 2001) and a doctoral degree (for his doctoral dissertation Pridjev kao vrsta riječi. Oprimjerena hrvatskim, 2007).

He worked at the Institute of Croatian Language and Linguistics from 1999 to 2003, when he joined the Department of Croatian Language and Literature, Section for Croatian Standard Language, FHSS, University of Zagreb. In 2022 he was conferred the title of full professor. He lectures Croatian phonology, Croatian morphology, and anthropological linguistics. In the academic year 2018/19 he was appointed Head of the Section for Croatian Standard Language, and in the academic years 2020/21 and 2021/22 Head of the Department of Croatian Language and Literature.

His scientific interest spans a number of distinctive topics: general and Croatian morphology with special focus on word-formation processes; Croatian and general phonology with morphology; Croatian syntax and relations between syntax, morphology and semantics; the issue of word classes, especially adjectives; the category of proper names and the special status of proper names in languages; the issues regarding the Croatian standard language in the 19th century; lexicography; as well as the interdisciplinary study of verbal humour.

He has published seven scientific monographs (including a manual and a dictionary as a co-author) and about thirty scientific papers in journals, proceedings, and books. Monographs: Hrvatski pravopis (Croatian Ortography, with Lada Badurina and Krešimir Mićanović, 12007, 22008), Uvod u pridjev (Introduction to Adjective, 2010), Uvod u jezičnu morfologiju (Introduction to Linguistic Morphology, 12012, 22013, 32018), Hrvatska morfonologija (Croatian Morphonology, 12013, 22018), Hrvatski rječnik stopljenica (Croatian Dictionary of Blends, with Ivana Klindić and Iva Borković, 2016), O britkosti. Filološko paljetkovanje po 2017 (On Sharpness. Philological Gleanings accros 2017, 2018), Uvod u verbalni humor (Introduction to Verbal Humour, 2019). In 2013 he was presented with the National Science Award for his monograph Hrvatska morfonologija (Croatian Morphonology).

He has compiled and edited seven books by famous Croatian philologists: Ljudevit Jonke (O hrvatskome jeziku, 2005), Vladimir Anić (Naličje kalupa, 2009), Josip Silić (Dihotomije, 2019), Marko Samardžija (Jezik i stil pripovjedne proze Ive Kozarčanina, 2020), Hrvatski jezik 1950-ih (Proceedings, 2021), Edita Hercigonja-Mikšik (Ogledi o jeziku ljudskome i protuljudskome, 2021), Riječi o riječi i Riječi (Proceedings, 2022). He is a member of the editorial board of Croatica, the journal of Croatian language, literature, and culture. From 2013 to 2022 he was the editor of Thesaurus Linguistic Series at Disput Publishing House in Zagreb, in which capacity he has edited books by some of the world’s and Croatian most prominent linguists (e.g. John L. Austin, George Lakoff, Mark Johnson, R. M. W. Dixon, Anatoliy Janovich Shajkevich, Dalibor Brozović, Branimir Belaj, Goran Tanacković Faletar).

In 2022 Ivan Marković was elected as associate member of the Croatian Academy of Science and Arts in the Department of Philological Sciences.
