Biography

Elso Kuljanić, a Croatian mechanical engineer was born on November 19, 1936 in Stivan on the island of Cres. He graduated from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture (now the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture) in Zagreb (1962), and received his doctorate from the University of Cincinnati (1972). Since 1975 he has been working as a professor at the Faculty of Engineering in Rijeka, and since 1993 at the University of Udine. As a part-time or visiting lecturer, he also taught at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture in Zagreb, and at the world universities: Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of Cincinnati, University of California, University of Kentucky, Università di Florence. Among other things, at the University of Rijeka he was dean of the Faculty of Engineering (1983–85), vice-chancellor (1989–1991), rector (1991–93). He was scientifically and professionally engaged in the processing of materials by particle separation and production engineering, and some of his discoveries and methods were also applied in production. He is an active member of many scientific and professional associations, and since 1997 he has been a full member of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts. He received the Award for Scientific Work “Nikola Tesla” (1977), the National Lifetime Achievement Award (2011), and the holder of the honorary title Professor Emeritus (2011).
