Curriculum Vitae

Željko Kaštelan was born in Rijeka in 1964, educated in Zagreb, and graduated from the Faculty of Medicine in 1988. In 2000, he received his Doctorate with Doctoral Dissertation “Immune Reactivity in Patients with Non-seminoma Testicular Tumor”. He is head of Urology Clinic at the University Hospital Centre Zagreb, and at the Faculty of Medicine in Zagreb head of the Department of Urology and head of the Urology course at the graduate and postgraduate studies. He has been professionally and scientifically trained in the Netherlands, Germany, and the USA. Since 2007 he has been heading the Department of Urology, University Hospital Center Zagreb, where he founded three Institutes: The Department of Kidney Transplantation, the Department of Urological and Reconstructive Urology and the Department of Endourology.

He and his associates founded several multidisciplinary Centers in University Hospital Centre Zagreb: Prostate Center, Center for Bladder Diseases, Center for Robotic Medicine, Center for Kidney Transplantation, Center for Reproductive Medicine and Andrology, and Center for Andrology of the European Andrological Academy.

He is the head of the Reference Center of the Ministry of Health for Urological Oncology and the Center for Kidney Transplantation at the University Hospital Centre Zagreb.

He significantly improved the field of urooncology in Croatia. With his associates he introduces and develops andrology as a multidisciplinary subspecialty in Croatian medicine. He introduced several new operational approaches and techniques in the urological profession in the Republic of Croatia. In 2019, he and his associates did the first operation using a complex robotic system, thus giving impetus to the implementation of robotic surgery in Croatian medicine.

As head of the Centre for Kidney Transplantation at the University Hospital Centre Zagreb formed with his associates one of the largest and most active kidney transplant centers in Eurotransplant. He performed the first kidney transplants and actively participated in the formation of kidney transplant programs in Osijek (2008) and Montenegro (2012).

He was president of the Croatian Urological Society (from 2007 to 2015). He is president of the Croatian Andrological Society, vice president of the Croatian Society for Transplantation Medicine and vice president of the Croatian Society of Urological Oncology. He is the head of the specialist training program in urology of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Croatia and the Committee for the Development and Monitoring of the National Plan for Early Detection of Prostate Cancer. He has been president of the Expert Council of University Hospital Centre Zagreb since 2015. He has organized several domestic and international meetings, actively participating in domestic and international scientific projects. He received multiple awards for his work.

Since 2020, he is a fellow of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts.
