Curriculum Vitae

Bojan Jerbić is a full professor at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture (FSB), University of Zagreb. He was born in 1957 in Zagreb, where he received his primary education. He graduated from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture, University of Zagreb in 1983. He began his scientific career in 1984 at the FSB as an intern and then an associate at the Department of Technology. He defended his master’s thesis at the FSB in 1987, in the field of Technology in Mechanical Engineering. He conducted his doctoral research as a Florida State University Fellow in 1989 at the College of Engineering, Innovation Park (now: Center for Intelligent, Systems, Control, and Robotics (CISCOR)). He defended his dissertation entitled “Interpretation of CAD model geometry in the design of automatic assembly by an expert system” at the FSB in 1993. In 1997, he became an assistant professor at the Department of Robotics and Automation of Production Systems. He received a full professor position in 2009. From 1993 to 2006 he was the head of the Laboratory for the Planning of Manufacturing and Assembly Systems and from 2005 to 2008 the head of the Department of Robotics and Automation of Production Systems. He was the Department Chair for the Planning of Manufacturing and Assembly Systems from 2007 to 2020. Since 2021, Bojan Jerbić has been the Department Chair of Autonomous Systems and Artificial Intelligence and the Regional Center of Excellence for Robotic Technologies (CRTA), which he established together with laboratories for Autonomous Systems, Artificial Intelligence and Medical Robotics.

Bojan Jerbić participates in the teaching of undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate studies, mainly in the fields of robotics, automation, artificial intelligence and engineering computing. To date, he has introduced more than 30 new teaching courses at the FSB (Artificial Intelligence, Computer Networks, Intelligent Technical Systems, Autonomous Systems, Planning of Automatic Assembly Systems, Vision Systems, Computer Aided Engineering, Programming Automata, Computer Aided Design of Mechatronic Systems and others). He participated in the development of the new Study Program of Mechatronics and Robotics at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture, University of Zagreb.

In his scientific research and professional work, Bojan Jerbić dedicated himself to the development of computer methods in engineering and artificial intelligence methods in robotics. For the last ten years he has been working on research and development of robotic applications in medicine, collaborating with prominent physicians. In doing so, remarkable results have been achieved in clinical applications, recognized internationally. His work on medical robotics marked his scientific research career, and resulted in the development of the neurosurgical robot RONNA, which has been operating regularly at the Clinical Hospital Dubrava since 2016.

He has been a leader or partner on more than 30 domestic and international scientific and technological projects, many of which have been proven through practical application. In his research projects, Bojan Jerbić brought together eminent scientists from multidisciplinary fields as well as young associate doctoral students who guarantee the further successful development of the fields of mechatronics, robotics and artificial intelligence. At the international level, Bojan Jerbić has developed intensive cooperation with many European universities and research centers. In collaboration with KTH (Stockholm), KIT (Karlsruhe) and KJCU (Madrid), he gathered in 2010 in Dubrovnik leading European scientists in the field of robotics and artificial intelligence at the doctoral summer school of robotics (Robotic International Summer School – RISS 2010) which they attended selected doctoral students from eminent European universities. It was the beginning of making a new generation of researchers and professors at the FSB, which will later be the backbone of the Regional Center of Excellence for Robotic Technologies. In 2021 in collaboration with the Embassy of Italy, the Italian Institute of Technology in Genoa and the University of Naples organized in CRTA (Regional Center of Excellence for Robotic Technologies) workshop “Robotics – From the workshop to the market”, deepening cooperation with leading European scientists in the field of robotics.

Bojan Jerbić continuously contributes to the overall development of scientific and teaching activities of the faculty by actively participating in the working bodies of the FSB, such as committees for informatization and computerization (1990-2006), graduate exams (1997-2010), postgraduate studies (2009). – 2010) and study programs (since 2002). In the period from 2010 to 2012 he held the position of the President of the Faculty Strategy Committee.

He also develops and promotes scientific and professional work through scientific organizations and professional societies. Since 2021, he has been a member of the University Council of the University of Zagreb. He has been a member of the Croatian Academy of Technical Sciences (HATZ) in the Department of Systems and Cybernetics since 2007. From 2013 to 2017 he held the position of the Secretary of the Department of Systems and Cybernetics. Bojan Jerbić was the president of the Croatian Society for Systems (CROSS) from 2015 to 2020 and a member of IEEE Computer Science and Robotics & Automation (1991-2000). He is a member of the editorial boards of the International Journal of Simulation Modeling and Transactions of FAMENA, where he served as editor-in-chief from 2020 to 2022. He was the president or member of a number of organizing committees of international and domestic scientific conferences, and a reviewer of scientific and technological projects.

Bojan Jerbić has been active in the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts (HAZU) since 2009 as a member of the Scientific Council for Technological Development. Since 2017, he has also been a member of the Scientific Council for Education and Schooling of the Academy. He gave four invited lectures at the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts:

  • Understanding Computer Geometry, Department of Mathematical, Physical, Chemical, and Technical Sciences, Computer-Driven Production Board, 1994.
  • Intelligent Production Systems, Conference: Modern Production Technologies and Materials, Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts – Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts, Zagreb, March 14, 2007.
  • New Approaches in Intelligent Production and Assembly, 2009, published in the Bulletin of the Department of Technical Sciences, HAZU, Zagreb, 3, (2009) p. 7-34.
  • Cognitive Machines – the Challenge of Transdisciplinarity, 2015

Activity of Bojan Jerbić has been recognized as a prominent scientist outside the FSB, as evidenced by more than 70 introductory and invited lectures held in the country and abroad at reputable universities and conferences (such as: Florida State University, Rochester Institute of Technology, Imperial College, King’s College, Osaka WCRAI – World Conference on Robotics and Artificial Intelligence, Malta MCAST – College of Arts, Science & Technology, King Juan Carlos University, Madrid, etc.).
