Curriculum Vitae

Vatroslav Vicko Grubišić was born in Solin on January 17, 1933. He graduated from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture, University of Zagreb, and received his Doctorate in 1970 from the Technical College (Technische Hohschule) in Munich. Since 1961, he has been a research associate at the Fraunhofer Institute for Propulsion Strength in Darmstadt. From 1978 to 1986, he was appointed representative of the director of the Frauenhofer Institute in Darmstadt, and until 1996, when he retired, he headed the Department for Strain Analysis and Strength Calculations.

Today, he is an independent consultant and director of the Technical Consulting bureau  in Georgenhausen, and external adviser to the Fraunhofer Institute in Darmstadt. He deals with research into the strength of the material and the reliability of structures in real load conditions with special attention to the strength at low-cyclic multi-axial load. To test the drive strength of machine elements, he developed several methods and appropriate devices.

In 1986, he received the Fraunhofer Award (Joseph-von-Fraunhofer-Preis) for his outstanding scientific contribution in solving technical problems, especially for the procedure and device for proving the service life of elements of mechanical structures, which today is used all over the world. He applied for 17 patents alone or with associates (most recently in 2007) related to methods and new devices for testing vehicles and aircraft, simulation of their load and for testing dynamic resistance to breakage

He is an advisor to a number of world-renowned companies in the design of road and rail vehicles and energy water and nuclear facilities. He initiated and led a number of international European Community projects, such as EU-Brite, EU-Copernicus and others.

He is the author of more than 180 scientific papers and contributions in books and over 1000 development projects, expertise, etc. He is a full time visiting professor at the China University of Technology Hefei. He is a full professor at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture in Zagreb and at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture in Split, where he raised several young professionals and introduced driving strength as a separate discipline. As a project expert of the World Bank, he participates in the development of the Jilin University of Technology in China. He works closely with technical universities in Braunschweig, Darmstadt, Munich, Maribor and Ljubljana, especially in procedures related to doctorates.

He is a distinguished member of the German expert federation VDI – GESA, where he performs the highest management duties. He organized and led a series of international seminars and gave more than 200 invited lectures in Europe, the USA, South America and China.

In 2008 he was elected as a correspondent member of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts.
