Curriculum Vitae

Nikola Basarić was born in Zagreb in 1975. He graduated from the Faculty of Chemical Engineering and Technology, University of Zagreb, and received his PhD in 2002 from the same faculty in the field of synthetic organic chemistry and photochemistry (supervisor: Prof. Marija Šindler). Since 2004 he has been employed at the Ruđer Bošković Institute, and since 2013 he was elected a senior scientist. In 2015, dr. Basarić was appointed Head of the Laboratory for Synthetic Organic Chemistry at the Department of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry of the RBI.

Dr. Basarić attended two postdoctoral specializations abroad, at the Catholic University of Leuven in Belgium (2003-2004) in the group for photochemistry and spectroscopy (supervisor: Prof. N. Boens) and at the University of Victoria in British Columbia, Canada (2005-2006) in the group for photochemistry (supervisor: Prof. P. Wan). In addition to postdoctoral specializations, he was a visiting scientist at the University of Cologne (collaboration with Prof. A. G. Griesbeck 1999 and 2007-2008), the University of Victoria (collaboration with Prof. P. Wan and Prof. C. Bohne, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2015), Central Salt and Marine Chemicals Research Institute in Bhavnagar, India (collaboration with Dr. B. Ganguly, 2007), Lanzhou University (collaboration with Prof. W. Qin in 2010 and 2011), and Northwest University, Xi’an in China (collaboration with Prof. J. Ma, 2019).

Scientific interest of Dr. N. Basarić are in synthetic organic chemistry and photochemistry, and especially in the investigation of mechanisms of photochemical reactions, as well as in supramolecular chemistry with potential application in biological systems. In the field of experimental organic photochemistry, he has been recognized nationally and internationally. To date he authored 103 scientific papers that received a significant impact with a high citation rate (more than 1600 citations without self-citations, H-index 24). He gave 13 oral presentations and 19 invited lectures at scientific conferences and institutions in Croatia and abroad.

Dr. N. Basarić was the leader of the successfully completed installation and research grant of the Croatian Science Foundation, and is currently the leader of a research grant. In addition, he has led two bilateral projects, with Germany and China.

Under the mentorship of Dr. N. Basarić, six doctoral dissertations and nine diploma theses were written. He participates in teaching at the graduate and postgraduate level at the University of Zagreb and Rijeka.

Dr. N. Basarić is a member of the Croatian Chemical Society where in the period 2011-2015. served as the President of the Section of Organic Chemistry. He is also a member of the European Photochemical Society and the IUPAC Subcommittee on Photochemistry. He is a member of the editorial board of the journal Croatica Chemica Acta.

Dr. N. Basarić has received several awards for scientific accomplishments the State Annual Award for young scientist in the field of natural sciences in 2004, Award of the Croatian Chemical Society Vladimir Prelog in 2004, and Award of the Croatian Chemical Society Leopold Ružička in 2008.
