Lovro Županović, F.C.A., Croatian musicologist and composer, was born on July 21, 1925, in Šibenik. In his hometown, he completed elementary school and a classical gymnasium. Until his departure to Zagreb to study, he worked as an organist, conductor, and artistic manager of singing societies.
In Zagreb, he studied Slavic and Romance studies at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (graduated in 1950), and music history at the Academy of Music (graduated in 1953); in Ljubljana, he received his PhD at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences with the thesis Results and Features of Vatroslav Lisinski’s work (1965), and graduated from the Academy of Music from the Department of Composition in the class of Prof. L. M. Škerjanac (1971). He was a high school teacher (1950-1961), then a professor of theoretical subjects at the Department of Music of the Pedagogical Academy in Zagreb (1961-1978).
He acted as a music critic (Vjesnik, 1953-55; Literary Tribune, 1959-60; Republic, 1966-67.) he also collaborated in Telegram (1968-69). For Grove’s “Dictionary of Music and Musicians” (London) he covered some units from Croatian music (1972, 2000).
Županović’s involvement in musicology (since 1960) is related to the research of Croatia’s musical past from the 16th to the 19th century. In this field he has published more than 80 papers, both scientific and professional, papers with which he participated in scientific conferences either at home or abroad (Brno, Bydgoszcz, Graz, Venezia). He has published several books with them. He was the first to encourage the organization of scientific conferences on Croatian musicians, and he set up exhibitions on the life and work of V. Lisinski, B. Bersa and B. Papandopulo.
He received the City of Zagreb Award for 1969 for his scientific monograph on the life and work of V. Lisinski, the “V. Lisinski” Award of the Croatian Composers’ Society for 1970 and 1973, and the “I. Tijardović” Award of the Croatian DMSR Croatia Concert (1977) and “I. Lukačić” (1985, 1994, 1995 and 1997 in Varaždin) for his musicological work and the Lifetime Achievement Award of the City of Šibenik (1999).
