Josip Županov, F.C.A., Croatian sociologist, was born on September 14, 1923, in Srednje Selo on the island of Šolta. After graduating from the Faculty of Law in Zagreb, he specialized in the social psychology of industry and industrial relations in the United States, and received his PhD in Ljubljana in 1965. From 1951 to 1955 he was editor-in-chief of the publishing company Kultura (later Naprijed). After that, he worked at the Institute for Social Management (1956 -1962) and at the Institute of Economics in Zagreb (1962 – 1966). He is a long-time full professor at the Faculty of Economics and Business in Zagreb (1968-1973) and at the Faculty of Political Science in Zagreb (1973-1994), in the subjects Industrial Sociology and Sociology of Work.

He became an associate of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts in 1980, was an extraordinary member since 1988, and was admitted to the regular membership of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts in 1991.

Major works from his creative contribution to the development of Croatian sociology are: “Self-management and social power” (1969), “Sociology and self-management” (1977), “Marginalia on the social crisis” (1983), “After the Flood” (1995).
In addition to industrial sociology, Županov was engaged in research ing the structure of power and the value system, and especially recently the problems of privatization, marketing and modernization.
