Domagoj Vidović was born on November 20, 1979, in Metković. In March 2004, he graduated from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb, earning a degree as a Professor of Linguistics and Croatian Language and Literature. He has been employed at the Institute of Croatian Language since September 1, 2004, where he currently serves as a Scientific Adviser Associate (as of 2024). In April 2011, he obtained his doctoral degree with the dissertation titled Anthroponymy and Toponymy of Zažablje, under the mentorship of Professor Dunja Brozović Rončević. Currently, he participates in several institutional and external research projects. Furthermore, he holds leadership positions as the Head of the Institute’s Metković branch (since 2014) and the Department of Onomastics and Etymology (since 2020). His primary research interests encompass onomastics in peripheral Croatian regions, dialectology, and accentology. Dr. Vidović has authored seven monographs, co-authored five volumes, and published approximately sixty papers in peer-reviewed scientific journals, along with over a hundred contributions to other scholarly publications.
He also serves on the editorial boards of several academic journals, including Studia lexicographica, Rasprave: Časopis Instituta za hrvatski jezik, Povijesni prilozi, and Stolačko kulturno proljeće. Additionally, he is a lecturer in postgraduate doctoral programs at the University of Split and the University of Rijeka.
Throughout his career, Dr. Vidović has received numerous awards for his scholarly contributions. As a co-author of the Školski rječnik hrvatskoga jezika (School Dictionary of the Croatian Language), he was honored with the City of Zagreb Award in 2013. In 2014, he received the Annual State Award for the Popularization and Promotion of Science in the field of humanities, awarded by the Croatian Parliament. He was also granted the Narona Award in the field of science by the City of Metković in 2016, the Hrvatski stećak Award by Matica Hrvatska Stolac for his outstanding contribution to Croatian literature in 2024, and the Annual Award of the Dubrovnik-Neretva County in 2026. His professional engagements include serving as a member of the Working Group of the Committee for Naming Settlements, Streets, and Squares of the Zagreb City Assembly (2014–2017 and 2019–2021). Furthermore, he was appointed an external member of the Government Commission for the Standardization of Geographical Names in 2020, becoming a full member in 2026. In April 2020, he was designated a national expert in the fields of geographical name standardization and Croatian standard language consulting, collaborating with the Croatian translation departments of the Croatian Language Service within the European Commission.
In addition to his scholarly work, Dr. Vidović is a member of the Croatian Writers’ Association. He publishes literary texts in several Croatian and Montenegrin journals, and in 2023, he published a book of prose fiction titled Priča iz pradavnine (A Tale from the Ancient Past). He has also translated two books from Esperanto.
On May 21, 2026, he was elected an Associate Member of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts (HAZU), and he serves as a member of the HAZU Committee on Onomastics and the HAZU Committee on Dialectology.
