Igor Rončević, a Croatian painter, was born on September 24, 1951 in Zadar. He graduated in 1976 from the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb. From 1979 to 1981 was an associate of the Master Workshop of Prof. Ljubo Ivančić and Prof. Nikola Reiser. He has been on several study trips to Italy, Germany and the USA. From 1981 to 1982 he was a scholarship holder at the Academie Des Beaux-Arts in Paris.

Igor Rončević has achieved about 50 solo exhibitions and has participated in about 100 group exhibitions at home and abroad. He had his first major exhibition outside Croatia in 1990 at the Galerie d’Art International in Paris.

Since 1995. Rončević is a full professor at the Academy of Fine Arts, University of Zagreb. In 2018 was elected as full member of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts in the Department of Fine Arts.

Igor Rončević is a prominent representative of the so-called new painting in Croatian art. At first he was inspired by American abstract expressionism. Later he created an autonomous sign language of original forms and refined color (Izvođač slika, 1987). In his later works, associativity is emphasized (cycle Čovjek i pas, 1995., and  Niz/serija, 2002–04; Tajna Nikole Tesle, 2006).  He is also engaged in photography and writes poems (collection Pjesme 1, 2003).
