Curriculum Vitae

Ranjan Deka was born in Dibrugarh, India, in 1954. In 1970 he graduated in anthropology, zoology, botanics and English from Dibrugarh University, in 1972 he completed his postgraduate studies, and in 1972 he completed his degree in anthropology in anthropology as a natural science at the University of Dibrugarh. As a fellow  at Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst – DAAD in 1984 he resided at the Institute of Human Genetics Institute für Humangenetik, Medizinischer Hochschule Hannover, where 1985-1987 he continued his work under the Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship programme.

From 1987 to 1990, he was a scientist at the Department of Human Genetics, University of Pittsburgh, USA, and in 1991–1997 he became a member of the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute’s Tumor Institute  working as part of  the Molecular Carcinogenesis Program at  the Department of Human Genetics. From 1997 to the present day he has worked at the Center for Environmental Genetics, Department of Environmental Health, University of Cincinnati, USA, where he is a full professor in permanent employment at the Division of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Center for Genome Information, Department of Environmental Health. Since 2011, he has been executive director of MPH and director  of the NIEHS Molecular Epidemiology in Children’s Environmental Health Training Program, and from 2014 to the present day he is director of the Division of Epidemiology, Department of Environmental Health, University of Cincinnati, USA.

Since 1987, he has been the leader of a number of courses at the University of Cincinnati, including Genetics of Complex Deseases, Molecular Epidemiology, etc.

Ranjan Deka is a molecular population geneticist. His scientific research interest is focused on the study of the field of genetics, especially the genetics of complex diseases.

He was awarded a number of awards for his teaching and scientific work, including the Director’s Award for Excellence in Service in 2014 and  the Director’s Award for Excellence in Research in 2016. For his scientific work and achievements in Croatia, he was awarded the Gorjanović-Kramberger Medal of the Croatian Anthropological Society in 2010. During his teaching and scientific work, he mentored  in the preparation of more than 20 master’s thesis and 30 doctoral dissertations.

Through his notable activities through international scientific associations, he has always emphasized very productive and scientifically rich cooperation with colleagues from Croatia, helping Croatian, especially younger, colleagues to engage in international scientific cooperation.

He was elected as a correspondent member of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts in 2020.
