Curiculum Vitae

Stevo Julius, a Croatian physician, was born in Kovin, Serbia, in 1929, and at the age of seven moved with his family to Zagreb, where he graduated from elementary and secondary school. From the age of 14, he was a participant in the Anti-Fascist Struggle. He graduated from the Faculty of Medicine in Zagreb in 1953 and received his Doctorate in 1964. As an internal medicine specialist and assistant at the Clinical Hospital Center Zagreb worked until 1964. Then he went to the University of the State of Michigan in Ann Arbor, USA, where he was head of the Department of Hypertension and a teacher for more than 40 years.

Professor Julius’s research interest focuses on the field of pathophysiology of the early stages of arterial hypertension and metabolic syndrome. Today, he is an active professor emeritus of internal medicine and physiology.

He is a guest professor at the Faculty of Medicine in Zagreb and Padua and an honorary doctor of science from the University of Gothenburg in Sweden. He is also an honorary member of the Australian, Croatian, European, Finnish, Hungary, Mexican, Spanish, Polish and Swedish Hypertension Society.

Dr. Julius is the author of more than 400 published papers in the world’s leading journals and chapters in books, and his broad intellectual interest is evidenced by two books of memoirs: Neither Red Nor Dead and Adventures in Hypertension.

He received the Lifetime Achievement Award and recognition  of The Corcoran Lectureship Council for Hypertension Research by the American Society of Cardiology, the William Harvey Award of the American Society of Hypertension, The Astra Cardiovascular Award of the International Society of Hypertension (ISH),  Distinguished Faculty Award from the University of the State of Michigan, the Merit Award  of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and honors from the European and Japanese Society for Hypertension. The International Society for Hypertension (ISH) has established the Stevo Julius Award for Excellence in Hypertension Education for the most respected educators.

Professor Julius’s long-standing contribution to the research and treatment of arterial hypertension has left a lasting and deepest mark in world science, and is especially responsible for the development and improvement of research and treatment of arterial hypertension in Croatia.

He was elected as a correspondent member of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts in 2012.
