Biography
Nikola Vladimir was born on 5 November 1980 in Metković, Croatia, where he completed primary school and a science and mathematics gymnasium. He is a Full Professor at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture, University of Zagreb (UNIZAG FSB), where he has been employed since January 2008. He graduated from UNIZAG FSB in 2007 and earned his PhD in 2011. From 2013 to 2017, he was Head of the Laboratory of Marine Engineering, and since 2017 he has headed the Chair of Marine Engineering. He has served on a number of faculty committees and boards, most notably through his long-standing chairmanship of the Committee for International Projects.
His scientific and research work is focused on three main thematic areas: the development and application of numerical methods and computational tools for the analysis of strength, stability, vibrations, hydroelasticity and fatigue of ship and offshore structures; safety, risk analysis, reliability, maintenance and life-cycle analyses of technical systems; and energy efficiency, environmental performance, alternative propulsion systems and the decarbonisation of various types of ships. He has undertaken several research visits and professional training periods abroad, including at Instituto Superior Técnico in Lisbon, Portugal, Pusan National University in Busan, South Korea, and the Research Department of Bureau Veritas in Paris, France.
Professor Vladimir has participated in numerous scientific and professional projects funded through competitive funding schemes, mostly as project leader. The projects have been funded under the following programmes and funding sources: EU FP7, Horizon Europe, the Croatian Science Foundation, the Science Foundation of South Korea, Interreg Danube, Interreg Adrion, Interreg Euro-MED, Interreg IPA cross-border cooperation programmes, the European Regional Development Fund, the European Social Fund, the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund, the Ministry of Science and Education of the Republic of Croatia, bilateral Croatian-Chinese scientific and technological cooperation, and COST Actions. He has also carried out a considerable number of professional projects for Croatian and international clients.
He is a member of Croatian and international scientific and professional bodies, including the Scientific Council for Maritime Affairs of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts and the International Ship and Offshore Structures Congress. Professor Vladimir serves on the editorial boards of several international scientific journals and is the author of more than 350 papers published in scientific journals and proceedings of Croatian and international conferences. He has supervised numerous bachelor’s and master’s theses, as well as several doctoral dissertations. He is fluent in English and German. He is married and the father of four children.
