The mission of the Croatian Academy has been defined in Article 3 of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts Act as follows:<\/p>

  1. The Academy promotes and organizes scientific research and encourages the application of the findings of this research, develops artistic and cultural activities, and is concemed with Croatian cultural heritage and its affirmation throughout the world;<\/li>
  2. It publishes the results of scientific research and artistic creation;<\/li>
  3. It makes proposals and gives its opinion on the promotion of sciences and arts in the fields which are of special importance to the Republic of Croatia.<\/li><\/ol>

    The Croatian Academy’s scientific and artistic activities are carried out through its nine departments, as well as through its scientific councils and committees, and scientific and research units (institutes), which will be described in the following chapters. The Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts collaborates with other academies of sciences and arts, universities, scientific institutions, state bodies, cultural and other institutions, as well as with individual scholars and artists from Croatia and abroad.<\/p>

    Among the most important of the Academy s numerous publications are:\u00a0Gra\u0111a za povijest knji\u017eevnosti hrvatske\u00a0<\/em>(Documents for the history of Croatian literature, 34 volumes);\u00a0\u00a0Diplomati\u010dki\u00a0 zbornik Kraljevine Hrvatske, Dalmacije i Slavonije<\/em>\u00a0(The Diplomatic Codex of the Kingdom of Croatia, Dalmatia, and Slavonia, 19 volumes);\u00a0Noviji pisci hrvatski<\/em>\u00a0(Modem Croatian Writers, 12 volumes);\u00a0Hrvatski latinist<\/em>i (Croatian Latinists, 11 volumes);\u00a0Gra\u0111a\u00a0 za gospodarsku povijest Hrvatske<\/em>\u00a0(Documents for the Economic History of Croatia, 21 volumes);\u00a0Djela<\/em>\u00a0(Works, 80 volumes), which publish monographs on Croatia as a country, its history, and language;\u00a0Prirodoslovna istra\u017eivanja<\/em>\u00a0(Natural History Studies, 107 volumes);\u00a0Pomorsko pravo<\/em>\u00a0(Maritime Law, 6 volumes);\u00a0Gra\u0111a za pomorsku povijest Dubrovnika<\/em>\u00a0(Documents for the Naval History of Dubrovnik, 6 volumes);\u00a0Problemi sjevernog Jadrana<\/em>\u00a0(Problems of the Northem Adriatic, 6 volumes), etc.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

    The Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts has organized over one hundred scientific meetings and conferences, evaluating works of important Croats throughout history. In addition, it has organized a number of symposia focusing on the history and economic development of Croatian regions and towns, as well as on the problems of Croatia’s development. The Academy has published the following dictionaries. Ma\u017eurani\u0107’s\u00a0Prinosi za hrvatski pravno-povijesni rje\u010dnik<\/em>\u00a0 (Contributions for a Croatian Historical Dictionary, 11 volumes), Bene\u0161ic’s\u00a0Rje\u010dnik hrvatskog knji\u017eevnog jezika od preporoda do l. G. Kova\u010di\u0107a<\/em>\u00a0(Dictionary of the Croatian Literary Language from the National Revival to I. G. Kova\u010di\u0107, in 12 volumes)\u00a0Rje\u010dnik hrvatskoga kajkavskog knji\u017eevnog jezika<\/em>\u00a0(A Dictionary of Croatian Literary Kajkavian, 8 volumes). Work on the large\u00a0Rje\u010dnik hrvatskog ili srpskog jezika<\/em>\u00a0(Dictionary of the Croatian or Serbian Language, 97 vol.) went on for almost one hundred years.<\/p>\n
