It is the only institution in Croatia that focuses on systematic geological and paleontological\u00a0researches of the Quaternary period with the aim of reconstructing changes in the climate, fauna, habitats,\u00a0and the evolution of hominids.<\/p>\n<p>The Institute&#8217;s collections, which are the results of many years of field researches,\u00a0comprise different and numerous finds of from the Paleolithic, Mesolithic and Neolithic cultures,\u00a0fossile vertebrates, sediments,\u00a0and the world-famous remains of hominids such as the Neandertals from the Vindija cave, and anatomically modern\u00a0humans from the caves: Velika pe\u0107ina, Vindija, Veternica, Bezdanja\u010da and \u0160andalja.<\/p>\n<p>The richness and diversity of the collections and the Institute\u2019s library provide many reasons for collaboration with other related institutions in Croatia and abroad as well.
