Silvana Vrani\u0107<\/strong> was born in Rijeka in 1961. She won the\u00a0Josip Juraj Strossmayer<\/em>\u00a0award for humanities in 2006 for her book\u00a0\u010cakavski ekavski dijalekt: sustav i podsustavi<\/em>\u00a0and the Annual award of the Kostrena municipality in 2006. Education and academic work<\/strong><\/p>\n She enrolled the study programme\u00a0Croatian or Serbian language and literature<\/em>\u00a0at the Faculty of Pedagogy in Rijeka in 1980 and she graduated on 1st March 1985. The title of her thesis was Fonologija mjesnog govora Metajne and it was written under the mentorship of professor Milan Mogu\u0161, PhD. Teaching<\/strong><\/p>\n Since 1st March 1994 she has taught seminars for courses\u00a0Staroslavenski jezik<\/em>\u00a0(Old Church-Slavonic Language<\/em>) (and as a separate part of that course\u00a0Slavenska pisma<\/em>\u00a0(Slavic Alphabets<\/em>)),\u00a0Dijalektologija<\/em>\u00a0(Dialectology<\/em>) and an elective course\u00a0Dijalektolo\u0161ka terenska istra\u017eivanja\u00a0<\/em>(Dialectological Field Research<\/em>) at the Department of Philology of the Faculty of Pedagogy in Rijeka (nowadays the Department of Croatian Language and Literature of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences). In the academic year 1995\/1996 she taught a course titled\u00a0Seminar diplomskoga rada<\/em>\u00a0(Graduation Thesis Seminar<\/em>). During that same and the previous academic year she was also involved in teaching\u00a0Staroslavenski jezik<\/em>\u00a0(Old Church-Slavonic Language<\/em>) and\u00a0Dijalektologija\u00a0<\/em>(Dialectology<\/em>) at the Faculty of Philosophy in Pula as an external collaborator. \nSince 2012 Silvana Vrani\u0107\u00a0 was an associate member of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts, and in 2022 he became a full member.<\/p>\n
\nShe successfully defended her MA dissertation titled\u00a0Fonologija \u010dakavskih govora otoka Paga<\/em> (217 pgs.) on 12th February 1993 at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb before the committee whose members were Milan Mogu\u0161, F.C.A. (mentor), Josip Von\u010dina, F.C.A. and professor August Kova\u010dec, PhD.
\nShe successfully defended her doctoral dissertation\u00a0\u010cakavski ekavski govori: sustavi i podsustavi\u00a0<\/em>(418 pgs.) on 12th October 1999 at the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Rijeka before the committee whose members were professor Iva Luke\u017ei\u0107, PhD (mentor), Milan Mogu\u0161, F.C.A. and professor Marija Turk, PhD.
\nShe became a research assistant at the Department of Philology of the Faculty of Pedagogy (nowadays Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences) in Rijeka on 8th June 1993, and on 22nd February 1994 she became an assistant lecturer. At the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Rijeka she was appointed a senior assistant lecturer in the domain of humanities, field of linguistics, branch Croatian, on 27th January 2000. On 9th May 2001 she was appointed an assistant professor, and on 17th July 2006 she was elected an associate professor.\u00a0 On 19th July 2011 she was elected a full professor in the domain of humanities, filed linguistics, branch Croatian.
\nShe has published three scientific books:\u00a0Govori sjeverozapadnoga makrosustava na otoku Pagu, 1. fonologija<\/em>\u00a0(2002, reviewed by Iva Luke\u017ei\u0107 and Marija Turk),\u00a0\u010cakavski ekavski dijalekt: sustav i podsustavi<\/em>\u00a0(2005, reviewed by Iva Luke\u017ei\u0107 and Milan Mogu\u0161) and\u00a0Govori sjeverozapadnoga makrosustava na otoku Pagu, 2. morfologija<\/em>\u00a0(2011, reviewed by Iva Luke\u017ei\u0107 and Josip Lisac). She has also published more than fifty scientific papers on Croatian dialectology.

\nShe was a research associate on several projects of the Ministry of Science, Education and Sports of the Republic of Croatia. As a research associate on the project\u00a0Dijalektolo\u0161ka istra\u017eivanja u sjeverozapadnome \u010dakavskome arealu<\/em>\u00a0(headed by professor Iva Luke\u017ei\u0107, PhD, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Rijeka) she studied \u010cakavian Ekavian idioms, idioms of the north-western \u010cakavian area, syntax and the basic vocabulary of \u010cakavian idioms of the island of Pag; as a research associate on the project\u00a0\u010cakavsko narje\u010dje: sjeverni i sredi\u0161nji dijalekti<\/em>\u00a0(headed by professor Iva Luke\u017ei\u0107, PhD, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Rijeka) she studied morphology and vocabulary of the north-western Pag area, \u0160tokavian and \u010cakavian traits of the idioms of the south-eastern Pag area, as well as border north-western \u010cakavian idioms; as a research associate on the project\u00a0Hrvatski jezi\u010dni atlas<\/em>\u00a0(headed by Mijo Lon\u010dari\u0107, PhD, senior research scientist, Institute of Croatian Language and Linguistics in Zagreb) she studied the idiom of Kr\u0161an and submitted a phonological description accepted for publication. As a research associate on the project\u00a0Hrvatski mjesni rje\u010dnik<\/em>\u00a0of The Miroslav Krle\u017ea Institute of Lexicography she studied the corpus of Kostrena, and as a research assistant on the project\u00a0Onomastica adriatica<\/em>\u00a0of Vladimir Skra\u010di\u0107 she participated with a synthesis of linguistic traits of the south-eastern and north-western idioms of the Pag macrosystem. She is the head of a scientific project supported by the Ministry of Science, Education and Sports of the Republic of Croatia titled\u00a0Prilozi za istra\u017eivanje \u010dakavskih dijalekata na podru\u010dju zapadne Hrvatske<\/em>\u00a0(part of a scientific programme\u00a0Povijesna, sakralna i jezi\u010dna ba\u0161tina zapadne Hrvatske<\/em>), and within the framework of this project she has published a book on morphology of the north-western macrosystem of the island of Pag and is currently preparing a dictionary of the idiom of Novalja on the island of Pag. She is also a research associate on the project\u00a0Hrvatska dijalektologija<\/em>\u00a0of Josip Lisac.
\nDuring 1995 and 1996 she participated in preparations for the organisation of a postgraduate course of studies\u00a0Lingvistika s posebnim obzirom na dijalektologiju<\/em>\u00a0(sinkronijski i dijakronijski aspekt<\/em>) (Linguistics with a Special Emphasis on Dialectology<\/em>\u00a0(Synchronic and Diachronic Aspect<\/em>)) at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Rijeka, and in the academic year 1998\/1999 she taught at this course of studies under the mentorship of professor Iva Luke\u017ei\u0107, PhD. At the postgraduate doctoral course of studies\u00a0Povijest i dijalektologija hrvatskoga jezika<\/em>\u00a0(History and Dialectology of the Croatian Language<\/em>), at which she teaches and co-teaches several courses, she designed the dialectological component. She was also involved in creating the programme of the course of studies in\u00a0Croatian language and literature<\/em>\u00a0(as a single and a double major) according to the ECTS system. By co-mentoring a classification thesis she has also participated in the work of the postgraduate course in linguistics of the Faculty of Philosophy in Zagreb. She has also participated in the teaching of a course in dialectology at the postgraduate course of studies\u00a0Kroatistika \u2013 Hrvatski jezik<\/em>\u00a0(Croatian Studies \u2013 Croatian Language<\/em>) at the Faculty of Philosophy in Zagreb.
\nShe has also been the president and member of several committees for evaluation and defence of doctoral dissertations, and the president of several committees for appointment of candidates to research-teaching positions. She also mentored a successfully defended MA dissertation on a group of \u010cepi\u0107 idioms, and is currently mentoring two doctoral dissertations: on phonology and morphology of Ekavian Labin idioms and on phonology and morphology of \u0160tokavian Ikavian idioms of Gorski Kotar. She has published several scientific papers in co-autorship with undergraduate and graduate students.
\nShe was actively involved in the\u00a0Festival znanosti<\/em>\u00a0(Science Fair<\/em>) 2009, the aim of which was to popularise science, where she gave a lecture titled\u00a0O dvama \u010dakavskim ekavskim poddijalektima na podru\u010dju Grada Rijeke<\/em>. She is the applications coordinator at the University of Rijeka for postgraduate courses of study at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Rijeka.<\/p>\n
\nAfter being appointed senior assistant lecturer in January 2000 at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Rijeka she has taught seminars in the courses\u00a0Staroslavenski jezik<\/em>\u00a0(Old Church-Slavonic Language<\/em>) and\u00a0Dijalektologija<\/em>\u00a0(Dialectology<\/em>) which are a part of the\u00a0Croatian Language and Literature programme<\/em>\u00a0(as a double and a single major), and later on she took over the lectures for the course\u00a0Dijalektologija<\/em>\u00a0(Dialectology<\/em>) which is part of the same programme (Croatian as a single major).
\nAfter being appointed an assistant professor in 2001 she has taught seminars that are part of the courses\u00a0Dijalektologija<\/em>\u00a0(Dialectology<\/em>) and\u00a0Dijalektolo\u0161ka terenska istra\u017eivanja<\/em>\u00a0(Dialectological Field Research<\/em>) which are a part of the\u00a0Croatian Language and Literature<\/em>\u00a0(as a double and a single major) programme at the same Faculty, and since the summer semester of the academic year 2005\/2006 she has also taught an elective course\u00a0Razvoj i uspostava hrvatskih narje\u010dja<\/em>\u00a0(Development and Establishment of Croatian Dialects<\/em>) which is a part of the\u00a0Croatian Language and Literature\u00a0\u00a0<\/em>programme structured in accordance with the ECTS system.
\nSince she was elected an associate professor she has taught the following courses:\u00a0Uvod u dijalektologiju hrvatskoga jezika<\/em>\u00a0(Introduction to the Dialectology of the Croatian Language<\/em>),\u00a0\u010cakavsko narje\u010dje<\/em>\u00a0(\/kajkavsko\/\u0161tokavsko narje\u010dje, cikli\u010dki<\/em>)(\u010cakavian Dialect<\/em>\u00a0(\/Kajkavian\/\u0160tokavian Dialect, in cycles<\/em>),\u00a0Dijalektologija hrvatskoga jezika<\/em>\u00a0(Dialectology of the Croatian Language<\/em>),\u00a0Dijalektologija hrvatskoga jezika: leksikologija i leksikografija<\/em>\u00a0(Dialectology of the Croatian Language: lexicology and lexicography<\/em>),\u00a0Dijalektologija hrvatskoga jezika: morfologija<\/em>\u00a0(Dialectology of the Croatian Language: morphology<\/em>),\u00a0Dijalektologija hrvatskoga jezika: terenska istra\u017eivanja\u00a0<\/em>(Dialectology of Croatian Language: field research<\/em>), and a course that is a part of the teaching module\u00a0Njegovanje kulturne ba\u0161tine: izrada \u0161kolskih rje\u010dnika<\/em>\u00a0(Preserving Cultural Heritage: Compiling School Dictionaries<\/em>) as a part of the\u00a0Croatian Language and Literature<\/em>\u00a0programme\u00a0 (undergraduate and graduate, single and double major, teaching and general programme) that is structured in accordance with the ECTS system.
\nDuring the academic year 2009\/2010 she taught a course titled\u00a0Hrvatski jezik i zavi\u010dajnost u nastavi<\/em>\u00a0(The Croatian Language and Local Traditions in Teaching<\/em>) at the Faculty of Teacher Education in Rijeka and their department in Gospi\u0107.
\nIn October 2005 she was a guest lecturer at the Department of Slavonic Languages and Literature of the Faculty of Arts in Ljubljana. In October 2011 at the Harriman Institute (Columbia University, New York) she gave a lecture on the development of the Croatian language as a system and as a standard language.
\nShe has mentored about thirty graduation theses in the domain of dialectology and a number of BA theses.<\/p>\n
\nShe has taught at the School of the Croatian language for teachers and students of Croatian from the expatriate community organised by the Ministry of Education and Culture in Novi Vinodolski in 1995, and, for a number of years, in Rijeka. She has given several invited lectures for teachers of Croatian language and literature and for wider public. She participated in the compilation of the Academy\u2019s\u00a0Rje\u010dnik \u010dakavskoga narje\u010dja<\/em>, where she worked on the idiom of Vodice. She has revised a number of proceedings and journals, several books in the domain of natural sciences and humanities, accentuated several collections of poems and word lists by \u010cakavian authors, reviewed several journal and proceedings papers. She has also reviewed several projects of the Ministry of Science, Education and Sports of the Republic of Croatia and of the National Science Foundation, as well as a number of dictionaries of \u010cakavian idioms, several scientific books and textbooks. She has presented several books and proceedings.
\nShe has been a member of the Organising Committee of the RFD since February 2002. She was also the editor of the linguistics section of the proceedings of the 6th and 7th\u00a0Rije\u010dki filolo\u0161ki dani<\/em>, and she was the president of the Organising Committee of the 8th\u00a0Rije\u010dki filolo\u0161ki dani<\/em>\u00a0held in November 2009 in Rijeka and of the\u00a0\u0160imun Ko\u017ei\u010di\u0107 Benja i njegova tiskara u Rijeci (1530. \u2013 1531.)<\/em>\u00a0conference organised by the Croatian Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Rijeka, and of a number of local conferences, etc. She was also the editor of the Proceedings in honour of Iva Luke\u017ei\u0107\u00a0U slu\u017ebi jezika<\/em>\u00a0and of the book\u00a0Grobni\u010dki govor XX. st.<\/em>\u00a0(gramatika i rje\u010dnik<\/em>) by Iva Luke\u017ei\u0107 and Sanja Zub\u010di\u0107. She was also the co-editor of the special edition of\u00a0Fluminensia<\/em>\u00a02012 containing papers presented at the\u00a0\u0160imun Ko\u017ei\u010di\u0107 Benja i njegova tiskara u Rijeci (1530. \u2013 1531.)<\/em>\u00a0conference. She is a member of the editorial board of editions of the\u00a0Katedra \u010cakavskoga sabora Kostrena<\/em>, the president of the Organising committee of the\u00a0\u017divot, kultura i povijest Kostrene<\/em>\u00a0conference and the editor of several issues of the Proceedings. She has been a member of the editorial board of\u00a0Fluminensia<\/em>\u00a0since 2010.
\nSince 1999 she has been involved in the work of the\u00a0Odbor za dijalektologiju Razreda za filolo\u0161ke znanosti HAZU<\/em>, and she is also a member of other professional associations:\u00a0Hrvatsko filolo\u0161ko dru\u0161tvo<\/em>\u00a0(Croatian Philological Society<\/em>),\u00a0Hrvatskogradi\u0161\u0107anskohrvatsko dru\u0161tvo<\/em>, and a member of the presiding committees of\u00a0\u00a0Katedra \u010cakavskoga sabora Kostrena<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Katedra \u010cakavskoga sabora Rijeka<\/em>. She is also the president of several committees for the preservation of original traits of the \u010cakavian dialect.
\nFor a period of seven years she was the chair of the\u00a0Croatian Language Section<\/em>\u00a0of the Department of Croatian Language and Literature of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Rijeka, and at present she is the head of the Department.<\/p>\n
