He was an associate (1971 &#8211; 2001) and director emeritus (from 2005 to 2009) of the\u00a0 Biochemical Institute &#8220;Max Planck&#8221; in Planegg-Martinsried and professor of the Technical University of Munich.<\/p>\n<p>He is a prominent expert in determining the structure of large biological molecules by diffraction of X-rays. In 1988, with J. Deisenhofer and H.
