He studied Slavic and Germanistics in Marburg, Berlin, Belgrade and Frankfurt am Main, and then worked as a proofreader for the German language in Zagreb (1960-1962). After his habilitation, he became a full professor at the Department of Slavic Philology in G\u00f6tingen (1969), where he also served as head until 2003.<\/p>\n<p>Today he is professor emeritus and lives in Bovenden near G\u00f6ttingen. He is a regular member of the Academy of Sciences in G\u00f6ttingen (since 1980) and president of the Academy&#8217;s Commission for Interdisciplinary Research of Southeast Europe (since 1987). He is a correspondent member of SANU, the Austrian and Slovenian Academy of Sciences. He edits the slavist publication &#8220;<em>Opera Slavica<\/em>&#8221; (Wiesbaden). In 2006 he was awarded the &#8220;<em>Vatroslav Jagi\u0107<\/em>&#8221; medal at the Fourth Slavic Congress in Vara\u017edin and \u010cakovec.<\/p>\n<p>The focuses of his scientific work are Russian literature and South Slavic literature, especially poetics, metrics and comparativeism, intertextuality and intermediateity. In 2000 he published <em>the Povijest ruske knji\u017eevnosti<\/em>\u00a0(Croatian edition in 2009, and in 2005 a biography of Alexander Pushkin (<em>Aleksandr Pushkin. Eine Biographie<\/em>). He wrote studies on Ivan Gunduli\u0107, Ivan Ma\u017eurani\u0107 and Miroslav Krle\u017ea.\u00a0<span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">He published a review of Croatian literature <em>Wie viele Blumen<\/em> in 2008, and the monograph on Miroslav Krle\u017ea <em>Wer ist Miroslav K.? Leben und Werk des kroatischen Klassikers<\/em> publishes in 2010.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Y2IQFc\" lang=\"en\">In 1990 he was elected a corresponding member of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts in the Department of Literature as a prominent name in modern German Slavic studies and one of the most important and persistent promoters of Croatian literature outside our borders.
