He graduated in geodesy from the Technical University of Graz in 1956 and worked at the same university as an assistant until 1958, and in 1960 he habilitated as an assistant professor. In 1964 he became a private assistant professor at the University of Hanover and a full professor at the Technical University of West Berlin for the course Astronomical and Physical Geodesy.

At the age of 32, he became president of the German Geodetic Commission, which has played a major role in the development and progress of geodesy in the world. In 1971 he became a full professor for the scientific field Theoretical Geodesy and Physical Geodesy at the Technical University of Graz, where he worked until his retirement.

He has written numerous scientific publications and articles, and his most important works are Physical Geodesy (with W.A. Heiskanen, 1967), Approximation Methods in Geodesy (with H. Sünkel, 1978), Advanced Physical Geodesy (1989), Earth Rotation: Theory and Observation (with I.I. Mueller, 1987), The Figure of the Earth: Theoretical Geodesy and the Earth ́s Interior (1990), Geometry, Relativity, Geodesy (with B. Hofmann-Wellenhof, 1992)

His work is highly valued all over the world, he is the winner of the Carl Friedrich Gauss and Alexander von Humboldt Awards, among other acknowledgments.

He was elected as a corresponding member of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts in 1994.

Helmut Moritz – Personal Page

[96
82
